Puerto Rican Americans make up approximately 3.5 million members of the Hispanic community in America with the majority of them living in New York and New Jersey. (Encarta Encyclopedia 2008) Traditional Puerto Rican language is derived from Castillian Spanish. Just like Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans now have a heavy English influence on their Native tongue, which is referred to as Spanglish. This language is used in all forms of social engagement amongst Puerto Rican Americans. Though the language is the same in all communities, political standpoints are not. Political views between Puerto Rican American communities are split. Some of them want to work within the American political system while others want to be independent from them. Although they may have strong views in either direction, there is a “low participation of Puerto Ricans in electoral politics” when it comes down to them voting in America. (Green, B. 2007) This has cause concern with many Puerto Rican leaders because some suggest that Puerto Rican Americans lack the opportunities and the education to vote while others suggest that Puerto Rican Americans do not have a strong affiliation with either party. A strong affiliation they do have is to their customs as Puerto Ricans. With those custom, come unique social conventions. A social convention that Puerto Rican Americans celebrate is El Dia de Los Tres Reyes, (Three King's Day) on the 6th of January. During this event, children receive gifts from “los tres reyes magos” (the three wise men) and the community pulls together for days of celebrating. Another social function unique to Puerto Rican Americans is the Puerto Rican Day parade held in New York and other large cities every June. Although Puerto Rican Americans have absorbed the American culture and its workforce, an economic problem that today’s Puerto Rican American communities face as is urban unemployment. A reason for this may be because the jobs that they once held, such as those in the garment industry, have become more and more limited. Another factor for low employment rates amongst Puerto Rican communities may have to do with the increasing number of single-parent households in urban communities. The majority of Puerto Rican Americans claim either the Roman Catholic or Protestant faith much of which is influenced by today’s American culture.
