The body’s response in increasing the temperature is to inactivate sweat glands and increase the production of adrenaline and thyroxin which causes an increase in the metabolism of the body thereby generating more heat (IHW, 2006). Moreover, the body responds by constricting the blood vessels (vasoconstriction) which causes arterioles to get smaller and decrease the blood flow to the skin to keep internal organs warm. In addition, the response increases shivering which leads to the contraction of muscles that generate heat through friction. Another response is piloerection which causes the hair on the body to stand up in order to trap more heat on the skin (IHW, 2006).
