Behaviorism
Founded by John B. Watson, behaviorism is a school of thought that digresses from structuralism or functionalism by arguing that psychology is not the result of an inner process, but is âbehaviorâ resultant from reactions to external stimuli. This lead to the Gestalt approach which believed that perception alone does not drive reactions, but perception was a complex mix of both stimuli and perceptual experiences. (Prentice, 1956)
Psychoanalysis
The most famous of psychologists, Sigmund Freud founded the science of psychoanalysis, in which he believed that the actions of the conscious mind were based on the suggestions of the unconscious mind. According to his theory, behavior and emotional reactions as an adult were based on deep-seated childhood experiences and the workings of the unconscious mind. This theory is the modern basis of psychological counseling and psychiatry. More connected to the diseased state of the mind, this approach is used to treat early trauma and understand current behavior based on inner perception and reaction. (Bishop, 2006).
