Johnson states that individual behavior is decided  by the interaction of a person’s genetic trait predispositions, environment, and the amount of stress within the environment at any given time. These biological and social influences create either adaptive or maladaptive behaviors (Johnson, 2007). This is a true general description of what influences human behavior; however, Kowalski believes there exists three other factors of social influence on behavior, which are “obedience, conformity, and group processes” (Kowalski & Western, 2009, p. 652). The following comparisons of communism and democracy will attempt to demonstrate Kowalski’s theory in each situation.  Obedience Kowalski describes obedience as a persons willingness to conform to authoritarian social beliefs. After World War II, research to understand the mindset of Hitler’s Germany were performed to establish how a society could be part of such horrors committed by the Hitler’s Third Reich. The underlying belief was that the German people were willing participants because of social, economic and political turmoil caused at the end of World War I. What was found was that was not the case. Many people are attracted to obedience (Kowalski & Western, 2009) without regard to their social environment.
