The set point theory states that after a meal (a bout of eating), a persons energy resources are thought to be near their set point and to decline thereafter as the body uses energy to fuel its physiological processes (Pinel, 2007, p. 305). This theory is problematic because if people had a set-point, there would not be any eating disorders. People would not be obese because once they reached their set point, they would stop eating. Studies have shown that “About 80% of the energy you expend is used to maintain the resting physiological processes of your body” (Pinel, 2007, p. 325), and often we consume extra foods, which are higher in calories then the calories we lose by exercising. Dieting does not always work either; though weight loss occurs quickly during the diets beginning, our weight losses decline automatically as a new stable weight is reached. Then when the diet is ended, we quickly gain weight as we eat more than what our new weight needs to be maintained. Subsequently, we revert to the heavier weight we were before the diet. Even though exercise and diet are important to health, we need to consider them as a lifestyle rather than a periodic venture (Pinel, 2007). There are other methods of weight loss that are being explored, including drug therapy.                          Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter that has been found to reduce hunger, eating, and thus weight. Serotonin has even been found effective in reducing the attraction to high caloric fatty foods many people crave, and has been shown to reduce the amount of food consumed during a meal. However, when marketed in the past as fenfluramine, and dexfenfluramine, these serotonin agonists were removed from circulation when they were associated with heart disease. Today, researchers are looking for serotonin subtypes that will be safe as a dieting aid (Pinel, 2007). Obesity questions          ...
