We all have equal access to the Father through Him alone. Catholics need to make penance for sins and do hard work in order to make it into Heaven; Evangelicals believe that only through grace from God can anybody be counted righteous for heaven (yet the evangelicals continue in works as an expression of love and gratitude for the gift of grace - not as a means of receiving grace). I found out later that Rabbi Bienstock is a World Religions professor at the University of Indianapolis. Upon the completion of my interview with the rabbi, I felt very well equipped to write a paper regarding Judaism.
Rabbi Bienstock was born in New York City. After attending, and graduating from, high school there, the rabbi moved to Israel to study. The rabbi was present in Israel during the Yom Kippur war, which he described as being a very profound life experience. Yom Kippur is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, being the day of atonement. The Yom Kippur war is called such because it began on that day (October 6, 1973). In short, Arab nations attacked Israel, knowing the army would be involved in ceremonies, thus catching the Israeli nation off guard. After a few days, the Israelis counter-attacked and on October 24, 1973, the United Nations called a cease-fire. The war served as a morale booster to the fairly young nation of Israel and proved to the Arab
Judaism P 4
nations that Israel was a nation ready to fight and die for itself and its people. (historylearningsite.org)
During my interview, I asked Rabbi Bienstock a series of questions regarding Judaism, his reasons for being (and staying) Jewish, and the difficulties he and his people faced. These questions and the rabbis answers are outlined below.
1. Were you born into Judaism?
Yes, I was born into a Jewish family.
2. If you had to choose another faith, which would you choose?
I would never choose another faith. It would be like changing myself as a man. I was born as a Jew and I will die as a Jew. One becomes a Christian, but if your mother is a Jew, you are Jewish. Even during the Holocaust, those Jews that converted to other religions were executed as Jews.
3. What is the reason behind your faith?
Judaism sees itself as a faith community that is covenanted to God. Religion and community are very important to Judaism.
4. What is it about Judaism that makes you a believer?
Judaism does not focus itself on do you believe. Judaism is concerned with how you act, how you behave, the way you treat people, your ethical and moral behavior, and how you lead the Jewish life. Being Jewish is who I am, and how I act, behave, and treat others, so I have tremendous devotion to Judaism and God.
5. What made you choose to become a rabbi?
Judaism P 5
I was always interested in Jewish study and Hebrew. I loved studying the Bible, history and philosophy. That is part of who I was as a person. I was a junior at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during the Yom Kippur war, which really motivated me to want to serve the Jewish people as a leader. From the age of 18 to 55, every man on the street was compelled to serve in the Israeli military. As a result, the only men on the street were students and tourists. This led me to want to serve the people of Israel as a teacher.
6. Being in Jerusalem during the war must have been a profound experience for
you.
Being in Jerusalem, for both ...

Preview: ... nd century because of the enormous impact and affects the Coptic Orthodox religion has on Christianity.
Although fully integrated into the body of the modern Egyptian nation, the Copts have survived as a strong religious entity that prides themselves on their contribution to the Christian world. The Coptic Church regards itself as a strong defendant of Christian faith (Encyclopedia Coptica, 2001). In fact, the Coptic Church has been reciting the Nicene Creed in every liturgy since the original Nicene Creed was created by Saint Athanasius, who was the Pope of Alexandria for forty three years from 327 to 373. Saint Athanasius, along with Saint Mark, are looked at to be the fathers of the Coptic faith.
The Coptic Orthodox Church and religion are looked at by many other Christian denominations to be very sacred and holy because of its origins. Egypt is looked at by many to be holy and sacred land. This view is shared by many because of the simple fact that Egypt is mentioned in the Bible numerous times as a place of controversy as well as a place of refuge. The Holy Family, which includes Jesus Christ, The Virgin Mary, and Joseph, traveled through Egypt and rested to flee from Judea and King Herod and his army which were trying to kill all new born children in order to get to Jesus. In fact, the well where The Holy Family stopped to rest and drink from is now a landmark in Cairo, Egypt and has a monastery build around it in order to preserve its holiness and sanctity. Tourists as well as Copts go to this landmark to pray as well as take a blessing from the well.
In Egypt alone, there are between fifty to sixty monasteries, this includes the remains of early monasteries which were invaded by the Arabs, in fact, the concept of the monastery traveled and spread to the western world. Currently, there are two major Coptic Orthodox monasteries in North America. They are located in California and Texas in a desert region. There one may find monks and nuns spending their lives living a simplistic life of fasting and prayer.
The Coptic calendar is another interesting aspect about the religion and culture. The Coptic calendar, the oldest in history, originated three millennia before Christ (Wassef, 2005). It follows a solar calendar and coincidentally has thirteen months as opposed to the lunar calendar which many are use to which only has twelve months. However, the thirteenth month in the Coptic calendar only has thirteen days. The Coptic New Year is called the eid il Nayroos which is September the eleventh, and falls the same time every year. The Coptic year is the extension of the ancient Egyptian Civil year. Currently, according to the Coptic ca ...

Mikvah is primarily used for two rituals, conversion and after the period of sexual separation during a womans menstrual cycle. However, many Chasidim regularly uses mikvah for general spiritual purification. (Rich 2007) Simply, a mikvah is a cleansing of the human body to remain pure to their creator.

Holy Days
Many Jewish holidays are observed, but there are four popular holidays that most American Jews observe. Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt. Passover begins on the night of a full moon in April, often overlapping with Easter. The most common tradition is to go to their parents house for a ritual dinner called a Seder on the first and/or second night of the holiday. (Rich 2007) The importance of not eating bread or grain products is in memory of the fact that their ancestors left Egypt so rapidly, they did not wait for their bread to rise. During this time of year a common beverage, Coke, is specially made for Jews since regular Coke is made with corn syrup (from a grain). Instead, the Coke is made with real sugar and has a very distinct flavor. Jewish law usually prevents work, school, or any business to take place on the first two and last two days of Passover. (Rich 2007)
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. The Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle rather than the common calendar that is based on the suns cycles. Therefore, the New Year usually occurs between Labor Day and Columbus Day. Like the American New Year, it is a festive time, and resolutions for the New Year ahead are made.
Yom Kippur is the day to reconcile Jews with their Creator for mistakes made in the past year. A day of atonement, fasting and repentances are the primary rituals of this holiday. Synagogues are packed with people on this day, for almost all Jews go to synagogue during Yom Kippur.
Perhaps the most popular holiday is Chanukkah (Hanukkah). Chanukkah is the festival of lights, celebrating the story of a lamp found in the Temple in Jerusalem. This lamp contained only enough fuel for one day, but lasted for eight days. This miracle is celebrated by lighting a candle on each of the eight days. The candles used are on a menorah. Many believe that this is the Jewish version of Christmas, but it is actually a minor holiday. Besides the lighting of the candles, games are played to win chocolate coins, but gifts are rarely given. When gifts are presented, it usually does not go past the extent of ones own children. While Orthodox Jews usually observe many more holidays, these four are the most widely celebrated holidays of American Jews. Observance of the Holocaust and other holidays may or may not contain rituals.

The Sabbath
Perhaps the most widely recognized symbol of Judaism is the observance of the Sabbath. Jesus was called the King of the Jews and this was seen as a challenge to Caesar (Fisher, 2005). Jesus was eventually handed over to military guards to be crucified (Fisher, 2005). Jesus died on the crucifix and his body was taken to a tomb and guarded (Fisher, 2005).
The disciples hid and mourned, but a few women who had known Jesus came to the tomb to prepare his body for a proper burial (fisher, 2005). They found the tomb empty, and two angel materialized to tell them Jesus had risen form the dead (Fisher, 2005). Jesus then appears to many of his disciples dismissing their doubts about his resurrection (Fisher, 2005).
The death and specifically the resurrection of Jesus gave confidence to his disciples. The followers believed that the Son of God had been among them in human form. The impact the life, death and resurrection of Jesus had on his disciples grew and expanded to form Christianity. The faith also holds the belief that to have eternal life in heaven one must accept Jesus as his or her savior (Fisher, 2005). As the ramifications of this dawned on Luther, his troubled soul found peace and his mission was begun (Wikipedia, 2008).
Luther now continued the study of the Word of God with renewed vigor and became increasingly distressed on how the Roman Catholic Church had departed from the teachings of the Bible on many points. The Catholic Church taught that tradition and the decrees of popes and church councils had the same authority as the Bible. Luther began to see the Bible as the sole authority of Christianity and that traditions and decrees were the inventions of people, not of God (Religion Facts, 2008).
By October 31, 1517 Luther was ready to publicly challenge the Catholic Church. He nailed The Ninety-Five Theses, (or ninety-five points that he was willing to debate) upon the door of the castle church at Wittenberg. At the time, the church doors were often used as a public bulletin board, and as he was a faculty member at the local college an invitation for public debate was not uncommon. It should be pointed out that Luther did not intend to break with the Roman Catholic Church, but to cleanse it of its teachings and practices that lacked basis in the Bible. Instead he began the great Protestant Reformation (Religion Facts, 2008).
Luther was summoned by the Catholic Church to Worms to account for defying the Roman Catholic Church. At the Diet of Worms, April, 1521, Luther was commanded to retract or he would be killed. It was not very long before there came to be divisions among the Protestants. Differences in interpretation of the Scriptures developed, especially in the matter of the sacraments. Those who agreed with Luther's interpretations came to be called Lutherans. (This name was first used by the enemies of Luther.) The other Protestants have come to bear the general name, Reformed. Among the Reformed there are various denominations, such as Presbyterian, Baptist, Congregational (Religion Facts, 2008).
The Lutheran Church is the largest Protestant church in the world. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America has a membership of over 2 million. The Lutherans first came to America in 1628. With the various nationalities, and hence the different languages used, Lutherans were divided into several groups or synods. These synods differ mainly in their forms of service and practice, but all have adopted the Augsburg Confession and Luther's Catechism as ...

Its not how you practice its what you believe I just remember that he created this world and everything in it and I worship him for that (prayer and other ways). What beliefs do you have? God created everything; Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin Mary, Jesus suffered and was crucified, Jesus died and was buried, Jesus rose from the dead, Jesus ascended to heaven, and anyone who can ask forgiveness for their sins can be forgiven. The main think is you have to believe in it or your not doing anything for yourself or for god. Do Christians believe they have to pray a certain amount of times a day? There is no set number that you have to pray, I believe it is as much as you feel you need to or you want to. Is there any holiday that Christians believe should not be celebrated? Some Christians believe that Halloween should not be celebrated, because it is worshipping satin. This is not a fact it is what you believe some people do not even relate religion to Halloween they believe it is a time for kids to dress up and get candy and nothing more. My family celebrates Halloween and we believe that and nothing more. Also many Christians do not believe in celebrating New Years, they treat this day like any other ordinary day. Are there any rituals in Christianity? Baptism and communion are sacred rituals also prayer, bible study, marriage, healing, funeral ...

Preview: ... Father God and a Mother Goddess, and that all things within the universe are interconnected. Wiccan religions also share an ethic of self-responsibility in doing as one chooses, so long as it brings no harm to anyone or anything (Herne, n.d.).
Wicca is a deep appreciation and awe in watching the sunrise or sunset, the forest in the light of a glowing moon, a meadow enchanted by the first light of day. Wicca is the fall of colorful autumn leaves, and the softness of winter snow. It is light, and shadow and all that lies in between. It is the song of the birds and other creatures of the wild. It is being in the presence of Mother Earths nature and being humbled in reverence. When we are in the temple of the Lord and Lady, we are not prone to the arrogance of human technology as they touch our souls. To be a Witch is to be a healer, a teacher, a seeker, a giver, and a protector of all things. (Herne, n.d.)
Herne (n.d.) stated, Wicca is a belief system and way of life based upon the reconstruction of pre-Christian traditions originating in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. While much of the information of how our ancestors lived, worshiped and believed has been lost due to the efforts of the medieval church to wipe our existence from history, we try to reconstruct those beliefs to the best of our ability with the information that is available.
Herne (n.d.) stated, We acknowledge the cycles of nature, the lunar phases, and the seasons to celebrate our spirituality and to worship the divine. It is a belief system that allows the Witch to work with, not in supplication to deities with the intent of living in harmony and achieving balance with all things.
Wiccan believe that the spirit of the One, Goddess and God exist in all things. In the trees, rain, flowers, the sea, in each other and all of natures creatures. This means that we must treat all things of the Earth as aspects of the divine. We attempt to honor and respect life in all its many manifestations both seen and unseen. We also revere the spirits of the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water which combine to manifest all creation. From these four elements, we obtain insight to the rhythms of nature and understand they are also the rhythms of our own lives. (Herne, n.d.)
Wicca is largely based on the old Celtic religions of the pre-Roman times in Europe. There are some differences and some likenesses between the two, but the basic beliefs are the same. Many of the symbolism and festivals between the two practices are the same.
Balanck (n.d.) stated, In the same way as all other cultures, the lifestyle of the Celts influenced the structure and beliefs of their religion, known as Druidism. When Anglesey was settled by the Celts in about 100 BC, it became the center of this religion. It consisted of Pagan beliefs in deities of the Earth, spirits of the woodland, sun god, as well as elves and demons.
Balanck (n.d.) stated, The Celts had great respect for the Earth, so many natu ...

Despite this, Christianity still spread throughout the world.
Jesus had twelve disciples who played a large role in the spread of Christianity. Jesus and his disciples taught others about Christianity. Often this was done by telling stories with spiritual meanings, known as parables. Jesus performed miracles, told people about God, fed crowds, and healed the sick. As a result, Christianitys popularity increased. Eventually, Christianity spread to many places, including northern Africa in the 2nd century, Russia in the 10th century, and North and South America in the 16th century. Today, people all over the world are practicing Christianity.
Another important person in the history of Christianity is a man named Saul. Saul originally hated and persecuted the Christians. Nobody could give answers to satisfied her.
When she went to the religious people in the community, their answers didn't make any sense to her either. She couldn't understand their idea of God and asked, "Why did God create the world? If he created it, why didn't he do a better job?" she couldn't figure it out, so when she went to college, she abandoned religion altogether, even though those questions remained. Later on, when Cindy was in graduate school and was teaching in L.A., she saw a flyer about a meditation course led by two monks, so she decided to go. Cindy was only going to go for part of the course, but wound up staying for all three weeks, because it was so interesting. One of the things they said was, "You don't have to believe everything we say." she really liked that, because she was so tired of people telling her what the Truth was and what she should believe. Instead, Lama Yeshe and Zopa Rinpoche said, "We just teach you. You decide for yourself." When she heard the teachings and started meditating on them, she saw that they described her life.
Cindy went to this meditation course in the summer of 1985 and was supposed to go back to teaching that autumn. But Buddhism affected her so strongly that rather than go back to her work, she quit her job and went to Nepal. Cindy went half way around the world to receive teaching. Her teachers spoke English, but they lived in Nepal.
Cindy said she was inspired become a Nunn when she heard the Buddha's teaching and looked at her experience; she thought the Buddha was really right. Ignorance, anger, and attachment do cause suffering; that is true, she thought. The teachings about karma also made sense to her; So Buddhism gave Cindy an avenue of action, a path to follow.
I asked Cindy, "How do you reflect on 9/11 and the Iraqi war as a Buddhist?" She said she couldn't tell anybody what their political views should be, because that is not her role. Buddhist teachings can help us understand what happened and enable us to respond appropriately. When we are harmed, the Buddha suggests that we ask ourselves, "What did I do to get myself in this situation?" instead of looking outward and blaming somebody else. Cindy said her hope is that America will do some self-reflection about what we did in relationship to other countries that provoked so much hostility towards us. If we reflect on some of our economic and political policies, we might discover why other countries don't trust us. In the present Iraqi war, it's very clear that we don't have the support of the international community (Hanner, 2007).
Buddhism to Hinduism
The world has many different religions. Out of these, Buddhism and Hinduism are the most popular beliefs in the general population. Hinduism is the oldest known relig ...

Preview: ... Religion

INTRODUCTION:
The Islamic religion is one of the three major monotheistic religions of the world. These three are Christianity, Judaism and Islam. According to both Fisher and Bassiouni, these religions all can be traced to the prophet Abraham, and all of them originated in the Middle East (Fisher, 2005; Bassiouni, 1999).
According to Bassiouni (1999), Abraham, who is also known to Islam as The Patriarch, was the father of Ismail (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac). The sons and daughters of Isaac formed what were to become the Hebrew tribes. The sons and daughters of Ismail formed what were to become the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula and were the first people to become Muslims. The term Islam comes from the same root words salaam which means peace and silm which means the condition of peace. A Muslim is one who is at peace and surrenders himself or herself to God. This surrendering to Islam means that one gives oneself to the belief without reservation, and following the letter and the spirit of the Quarans prescriptions (Bassiouni, 1999).
According to Fisher (2005), Islamic tradition states that the Islamic region sank into historical oblivion after turning away from Abrahams monotheism. Fisher also states that after centuries of oblivion, Muhammad was born around the year 570 CE to a poor clan in a very powerful tribe in the region. His parents and his grandparents died and Muhammad was left to his uncle. His uncle put him to work as a shepherd (Fisher, 2005).
Fisher also mentions that when Muhammad was in his teens and on a trip to Syria with his uncle, they met a Christian monk who said that he had the markings of a prophet. When Muhammad was forty, he went on a spiritual retreat during the month of Ramadan. The angel Gabriel came to him and insisted that he recite, and the angel dictated the words that he should recite which became the beginning of the Quran (Fisher, 2005).
Fisher mentions that three years after these revelations, Muhammad was instructed to preach publicly and was ridiculed and stoned by the Quarayshites (Fisher, 2005). Muhammad was forced into exile for three years with his followers. When they returned, they continued to be persecuted by the Quarayshites. During his fiftieth year, which was called the Year of Sorrows, his wife and his uncle died (Fisher, 2005).
Fisher mentions that during the height of his trials, he had ...

The Shia believe that only the heirs of Ali the fourth Caliph are the legitimate successors of Muhammad.

Interview
For my interview I arranged to talk to a college student Aamir Jilani who volunteers his time working for the Islamic Center. The Islamic Center is an organization that works with the Muslim community by providing seminars, youth activities, and social services for people. Aamir spends a lot of his time working with younger kids and attending religious functions at the Islamic Center.
Q. Do people react negatively toward you based on your religious beliefs?
A. No, not really. I do not receive a lot of negative reactions from people. Most of the people that do have anything to say do so because they dont have an understanding of Islam. They see what is shown on tv, they see suicide bombings and maybe they think we are all capable of doing things like that. Basically people like that feel that way because of ignorance.
Q. How much of an impact has 9/11 affect peoples views of Muslims?
A. There was a huge impact. With all the media coverage of that day there was a lot of channels that would continuously show footage of different groups of the extremists and didnt do a lot to make a point that not all Muslims are trying to find ways of attacking America.
Q. What is the main misconception about Islam?
A. I think that when people hear the word Islam or Muslim they instantly think about suicide bombers or hijackers. Islam is based on peace and submission to Allah. Terrorists are not just Muslim people those types of acts go on around the world. Islam is not based on violence or war.
Q. When do you think you will make a pilgrimage to Mecca?
A. I have been to Mecca. I went with my father two years ago. It was an amazing experience. There were so many people there. All different races of people, men, women. I am definitely going back again.
Q. What holidays do you celebrate as part of your faith?
A. Well there is the Idul Fitre. After we fast for Ramadan we attends prayers and get together with family and friends. It is a way of be thankful.
Q. What is the importance of not eating pork?
A. Islam allows for animals that live in pairs to be eaten. Pigs dont live in pairs. It is sort of you are what you eat.
Q. What do you believe about the afterlife?
A. The life that we live now is just temporary. Everyone is accountable for their actions, what they do. If youre strong in your faith youll be judged and be given eternal happiness.
Q. Can a person just follow the Five Pillars and have eternal happiness?
A. No its more than that. The Five Pillars are a guide to a Muslims life, but you have to also have to live that ...

Every religion has their own beliefs, traditions and ways of worshipping. Buddhist do not have any personal God(s). Buddha is not a God but some Buddhist will turn to Hindu Gods if they are in need. Christians however, believe in God and Jesus. They believe that God created the world, Mary gave birth to Gods son Jesus, and Jesus passed the word of God. The traditions between the two are also a little different. Buddhist meditate, do prayer wheels, Buddhist new year, Vesak (Buddha Day), and Elephant Festival. Christians get baptized, have communion, prayer, bible study, marriage, funerals, Christmas, Easter, Good Friday, and Lent. Christians worship in church, chapels, cathedrals, or meeting halls. During these worships they read from the bible and a sermon (What is Christian Worship?). Buddhist either worship at home or in temples. At home they will have a separate room and turn it into a shrine with a statue of Buddha, candles and a incense burner. The temples are designed to symbolize the five elements: fire, air, earth, water, wisdom. There are many different forms of worship. The first group left the Tower of Babel around 2250 B.C., crossed over into Europe, and immigrated to the eastern coast of Central America. The second group left Jerusalem around 600 B.C. and landed in what is now known as Peru. This second group divided into two warring parties, the Nephites and the Lamanities, whom are considered to be the American Indians. Mormon records say that Jesus, after his death, came to America and preached to Indians and Jews.
The Church of Latter-day Saints began gaining many members in 1831; a church in Kirtland, Ohio became the largest center of Mormons countrywide. It is located at 2510 Juan St, San Diego, CA. The Mormon Battalion Association was the easiest place to visit since non LDS members were allowed inside. The men have been awarded with taking part of the longest infantry march in U.S. history, digging the first water wells, building the first brick kiln and first brick cour ...

At an early age Charles received his first impressions of religion from his Presbyterian parents. As Charles got older, he began to become spiritually troubled, especially concerning the doctrines of eternal punishment and predestination. She then went to another class and said, My name is Cindy McCormick and I am one of Jehovahs Witnesses, the teacher then responded with Well, Cindy, come on in.
One another occasion my son Mac stood up for his right not to salute the flag. He told the teacher I respect the flag, but I will not worship anything other then Jehovah God the teacher put him in a closet since it was raining out side that day. But he said, I was fine with that, I stood up for what I believe in. Other than those issues the kids did not have any more trouble than any other child would in school with their peers.
Knowing how being one of Jehovahs Witnesses shaped and challenged her life, I moved on to questions regarding her faith. I asked, Why have there been changes over the years in teachings of Jehovahs Witnesses? Doris answered, Proverbs 4:18 shows that Jehovah enables his servants to understand his purpose in a progressive manner. Increased Knowledge often requires adjustments in ones thinking. Jehovahs Witnesses are willing humbly to make such adjustments.
It is common knowledge that Jehovahs Witnesses visit their neighbors to speak about the bible. Why do Jehovahs Witnesses preach from house to house? And what conflicts have you personally encountered while in this preaching work? Doris answered, Well Jesus foretold what our work would be at Matthew 24:14; This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come. He also told us at Matthew 28:19 to go and make disciples of the people of all the nations. The conflicts that I have encountered, I have had a man walk me off his property by my arm telling me never to come back again. I have had many doors just slammed in my face. I have had people use rude and foul words towards me as well.
After Doris told about her conflicts I asked, Have these conflicts set you back in your ministry at all? Doris responded, No, it has not deterred me from the path I have taken at all. It is worth the roadblocks to be able to share with those who do want to hear what I have to say. And I have had many great conversations with individuals in the door-to-door work.
Society has seemed to categorize your Religion as a Cult or Sect, Referring to C.T. Russell as the founder of Jehovahs Witnesses. What is your viewpoint on this assumption? Doriss responded to this question with, Well, first looking at the definition of Cult and Sect, Cult meaning to be unorthodox or having rituals and a sect meaning to break away from an established religion and who follow a leader. Jehovahs Witnesses are not an offshoot of some church but include persons from all walks of life. We do not look to a human, but rather to Jesus Christ, as our leader. We strictly adhere to the bible. We do no isolate ourselves from other people. We live and work in the midst of everyone. As for C.T. Russell, the modern-day history of Jehovahs Witnesses began with the forming of a group for bible study in Allegheny, PA in the early 1870s. At first we were known just as Bible Students, but in 1931 they adopted the scriptural name of Jehovahs Witnesses.
Since Jehovahs Witnesses do not follow a leader, how old is the religion of Jehovahs Witnesses? Doris responded, According to the bible, the line of witnesses of Jehovah reaches back to faithful Abe ...

This caused me to become very uncomfortable, and others began speaking in tongues. No one else looked surprised by this, so I assumed it was normal. When all this talking stopped Pastor Don began to speak a little bit more, we sang a song then the service ended.
Afterward everyone was very friendly and everyone seemed to know me. Brenda asked them to pray for me, while I was going through my seven surgeries. On the way out was a basket marked Donations, and as people left they would put money and change into this basket. This was a very different experience for me and overall it was pleasant.
I chose my friend, Brenda to interview for this paper. We began by discussing important holidays in her religion. Brenda told me that Christmas and Easter were most important to her and her traditions are to set out her nativity scene where she can look at Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. There is much singing and they praise the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Brenda says it is especially important during these times to witness to others about how God has gotten her through some hard times. Friends gather and they share their burdens together. They pray and do not judge each other (Brenda Milisock, personal communication, February 7, 2008).
Next I asked her how religion has shaped her life. Brenda began to tell me how it has made her more carefree, confident, caring, and gives her peace beyond understanding. The most challenging part of her religion is that, she is persecuted for her beliefs, and when she speaks of the Lord. I asked her about how much she prays but, she could not give me an exact amount in hours and minutes. Brenda said she prays all the time and it depends on what trials she is going through and her personal experiences. Brenda does feel that her religion is the only one worthy of following because with her religion, she says it is Biblical and what God has taught from the beginning. She claims people are just finding out about it and people are being transformed by it; however she does feel that in the end days there will not be Catholics, Protestants, and other religions because there is only one God, so God will pour out his spirit on all his people, and we will all be one (Brenda Milisock, personal communication, February 7, 2008).
I wanted to know from Brenda if she thought that people who worshiped differently from her would go to the same place as her when they die. She told me that she feels as long as people call on Jesus Christ with their final voice, they will go to heaven. She goes on to say that people worship differently but as long as people call on Jesus name they shall be saved. She tells me the Bible says people who call out my name and in a blink of an eye they can be saved. Basically she feels if people do not call on Jesus with their dying breath they will go to hell, but adds that only God know ...

At this Novena service there would be the group recitation of the holy Rosary. This Novena Rosary service was begun after alleged apparitions of Mary to three peasant children at Fatima, Portugal. It is reported that the oldest girl was given instructions by Mary to recite the Rosary using a chain of beads to count the particular prayers.
There would also be special days set aside each year on the Catholic liturgical calendar to honor particular saints. Catholics are known to pray directly to these saints for answers for their prayer intentions. One example would be Saint Jude, who is known as the apostle of hopeless cases. My aunts would always be praying to him to change the ways of my uncles. Then there is a practice of Benediction, which is a church service with the unique exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for all to see and venerate. Mostly all the people like this service as it combines music and singing of hymns with prayers, adoration and meditation. It gives the people an opportunity to pray in a holy atmosphere along with a priest, usually the Pastor, and smell the sacred incense as an offering to God. The Catholics believe that the Communion bread on display for worship is the actual body of Christ. This transfer of bread into Christs body occurs as the priest says certain words to causetransubstantiation or a change in the substance of the bread into the substance of Christs actual body. It should be noted here that the Christian or protestant churches also have communion and believe it to be a symbol or a remembrance of Christs broken body at the time of His crucifixion and death. However Protestants dont believe in a change of substance in the bread itself.
Today with global media coverage of all kinds, we can view all the worlds religions and their different forms of worship. In fact, in just the city of Jerusalem alone, we can observe Jews, Roman Catholics, Eastern Greek Orthodox, Protestant Christians, Muslims, and several other religious groups in competition and even conflict with each other to worship what they believe in. There is no way that all these world religions and denominations are worshiping the one true and living God. Their religions and belief systems are all different and usual ...

Consequently, when a person reflects on the amount and range of the worlds religions, it is not shocking to discover that there are overabundances of religious principles that have been formed. Bearing this in mind, this analysis reflects on the capacities of religious inquisition that has been fashioned. Particularly, this analysis evaluates Christianity and Shintoism. Through a close reflection of what has been written regarding these religions, and through a personal interview that was conducted, it will be feasible to present an explanation of the backgrounds and similarities and differences of the religions.

In order to start this analysis, it is first accommodating to think about the essential background of both religions. First, examining the basic doctrines and evolution of Christianity, it becomes apparent that this religion developed from the Jewish tradition as depicted in the Old Testament. The difference is, however that Christianity firmly believes in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christianity concerns the capacity of God to resurrect the dead, just like He did for Jesus. Through finding faith in Christ, the followers are given the ability to guarantee that they could live a life that would give them eternal salvation (New Advent, 2009). The New Testament offers detailed depictions of how Jesus lived and insights into his resurrection.

When examining Christianity, it becomes very clear that the magnitude of the resurrection is momentous to the development of the religion. In general, the resurrection is the most significant characteristic that expresses Christianity. Through the resurrection, a person is given salvation from God an eternal life. Even though the precise circumstance of the resurrection is what separates Christianity Judaism, there is a drive to recognize why Christianity has become so dominant to its followers. One of the reasons why it has become so dominant is the result of many of its followers believing that through faith, God will guard and supply.
It is now obvious why Christianity is such a distinguished religion; it is because of the assurances that it gives its followers. Every person goes into a covenant with God when s/he accepts the teachings of Christ (New Advent, 2009). Through this procedure, a person is assured to be given eternal deliverance for his or her labors in living a life that is based on the principles of Christ. Despite the consequences of how tricky life is, a person must constantl ...

Preview: ... orah, are considered to be the most important part of the Torah. One thing that separates Judaism from a lot of other religions is that there belief is there is no heaven or hell. To receive forgiveness for the sins a person has committed, that person must engage in Mitzvot which is following God’s rules. To receive forgiveness the individual must ask for the forgiveness. There are many different sects in Judaism. Some of the major sects in Judaism that are originally recognized are the Sadducees, Pharisees, and the Essenes. The Sadducees are wealthy and holy men who very strictly followed the Torah. The Pharisees are more of the “Liberal” believers of the religion that conformed the Torah to fit their everyday lifestyle. They slightly vary in beliefs and practices. The Jewish people have many practices of which one held to the highest standard is script study. Script study is done on a daily basis by all followers. This practice is started as soon as a child as child is able to read. Another practice is observation of the weekly Sabbath as a day of rest, starting at sundown on Friday evening (Robinson, 2007). Another well known practice is the eating of kosher foods. The word Kosher is the Anglicized form of the Hebrew Kasher, which literally means “good” or “proper,” but came to indicate an item fit for ritual use (Judaism, 2009). The Jewish people celebrate varies holidays such as Hanukkah which is the Festival of Lights. Some confuse this with the Christian holiday Christmas but is in fact an entirely different celebration. Some o ...
