Depression seems to be a common thing that everyone experiences as some point in time in their life, however the degree of severity is what makes difference. If depression is taking over a person’s life and interfering with their daily obligations then is might be major depression or clinical depression. Clinical depression can make people lose focus or concentration, they may have difficulty making decisions, and they may not want to socialize anymore, in more severe cases a person may think about suicide as a way out. Depression is not alone in being a major psychotic disorder of emotion though, there is also mania which is opposite of depression because people experience emotional heights instead of lows. For people with mild cases of mania they may seem very upbeat and talkative, while people with more severe cases might get out of control not doing their normal daily chores or obligations. There are many causes and types of psychiatric disorders and diseases; luckily, today there are many new drugs to treat effectively those afflicted by them. This paper will describe five of these disorders and diseases, what is believed to cause them and what medications are often prescribed for their treatment.
Schizophrenia is one such disorder believed to be genetic, where 1% of the population is born with a propensity to develop schizophrenia, often brought on by an individual’s early life experiences. Triggers for schizophrenia include; “infections, autoimmune reactions, toxins, traumatic injury, and stress” (Pinel, 2007, p. 483). Along with the proof of a genetic link, schizophrenia is now known to be a biological disease rather than just a disorder. Modern magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) scans have shown brain differences between schizophrenic, and normal brains. The schizophrenic is likely to show up to a 25% loss of brain matter volume, mostly within the temporal and frontal lobes, which control judgment, and coordination of our thought processes (Nemade & Dombeck, 2006).
