$1.00 week 4 check point

Q:
Week 4 CheckPoint: Population Size – Due Friday

Resource Required

Ch. 7 VLR, Alien Invasion located under the Week Four Materials section of the aXcess page.

Background

Responses must include a description of the four factors that produce changes in population size: births, deaths, immigrants, and emigrants. See p. 157 of the text for descriptions.

Then identify that excessive births affected the nutria population and make a prediction about what will happen to the nutria population after the land is depleted of the nutriasÂ’ food resource: The high birth rate of the nutria in an ecosystem without natural predators creates a rapid growth in population until they deplete the area of their food supply (vegetation). Unfortunately, the marsh environment they have invaded in the video cannot easily recover from the defoliation. The population of nutria will decline without available food. Where possible, the nutria population will migrate to deplete and damage nearby ecosystems. Refer to Ch. 7, pp. 158-160 for related scenarios.

Birth rates and death rates have an impact on world populations, as do immigration and emigration. Immigration [is when] individuals enter a population and increase its size, and emigration, [is when] individuals leave a population and decrease its size (Berg ...

Due to the environment where Nutria’s tend to live, there are no “real” predators to help with the downsizing of their rapidly growing population. These rodents thrive off of eating plants and their roots, which result in unsettling grounds to walk on. Fortunate for the Nutria’s, they are light-weight and are able to move across these unsteady grounds with ease ...
