Q:
As health professionals who are also educators, it is important to understand the complexity and uniqueness of our audiences. Given that the individual and group needs of our clients vary significantly, our teaching strategies must be adaptable and client-specific. Consider the teaching strategies that may be needed to accommodate each of these major ethnic sub-cultural groups listed below:
1. Hispanic/Latino
2. Black/African American
3. Asian/Pacific Islander
4. American Indian/Alaska Native
Are there any specific cultural factors that should be taken into account when working with these groups? What relevant cultural differences distinguish each group from the other with regards to health education? Discuss at least one teaching methodology that would work best for each group and why you would select that strategy. If you had to design an intervention for behavioral change within each of these groups, discuss at least one difference as well as any similarities between your teaching strategies for each specific group.
Consider the teaching strategies needed to accommodate different disability categories. Select three of the disability categories below and provide a detailed discussion of the types of teaching strategies needed to accommodate them:
1. Sensory Disabilities
2. Learning Disabilities
3. Developmental Disabilities
4. Mental Illness
5. Physical Disabilities
6. Communication Disorders
7. Chronic Illness
What unique challenges do these groups face? What is the role of the family in influencing education efforts? How can health professionals properly assess and teach individuals within each category?
