For people with mild cases of mania they may seem very upbeat and talkative, while people with more severe cases might get out of control not doing their normal daily chores or obligations. Patients that experience both depression and mania may suffer from bipolar affective disorder, while those that don’t suffer from mania are said to have unipolar affective disorder. There are also two different forms of depression, reactive depression that happens after the lost of a love one or a job and endogenous depression, which suddenly appears for no particular reason (Pinel, 2007). Depression and mania seem to have environmental and biological factors just like schizophrenia. Stress seems to be the major factor in development of and triggering attacks of depression, but studies show there may be some genetic roots as well. Studies done on twins indicate that there is genetic roots in the affective disorders by showing that twins are more likely to develop the same disorder. There are four main classes of drugs used in treating depression, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tyicyclic antidepressants, lithium, and selective monoamine-reuptake inhibitors. While some of these drugs can be very helpful others have side effects. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are one of the drugs with side effects due to the fact that patients have to avoid tyramine-rich foods to decrease the risk of strokes. Sleep also plays a role in affective disorders, lack of sleep might have a significant influence on the disorder and a night of good sleep could improve the condition.
