Q:

The events of September 11, 2001 shocked the United States population more than any event since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Yet many historians argue that the signs of animosity towards the United States had been growing for decades, and were largely ignored during the Clinton administration. Many citizens proclaimed, “Why do they hate us so?” in great shock and surprise. Students will respond to the following:

  • Explain the shift in focus of the U.S. population away from world events after the fall of the Soviet Union and the effect it may have had on our national security.
  • Agree or disagree with the following statement and cite your reasons: “The United States is the most generous country in the world and should be loved by its trading partners and people around the world. Foreigners who dislike us are receiving too much anti-U.S. propaganda.”
  • Agree or disagree with the following statement and cite your reasons: “In their hearts, most of the people around the world want what we have here in the United States – they want to be like us.”

Sadly, this was not the case, and on that calm September morning, everything changed.   The US population in general has always been an introverted group. Most of us do not actively involve ourselves, or follow world events. Many of us could not name the Prime Minister of Canada ( currently Stephen Harper), much less tell you what important events have happened half way across the world. Before September 11th 2001, few people could point to Afghanistan on a map, much less tell you where cities such as Kandahar and Kabul were, or even tell you who Osama Bin Laden was. This inward focused mentality also affected the higher levels of our government and security agencies. Until that day in ...

Likewise, the nation maintained its national defense program but did not give much care to the national security as before with the USSR because of the heightened tensions and the threat of a looming Cold War. I do believe that the US is the most generous country in the world; however, I do not expect all our trading partners to fervently or ardently support the US efforts in the international community. Adam Smith’s theory of self-interest influences man or in this case nations to look after their own interests or self-interest. Being part of the international ...
