In determining the factors that lead to an increase in the number of high school dropouts, one has to look at both external and internal factors. Internal factors are those brought about by the individual himself/herself while external factors are those generated by the variables that surround the individual. Considering internal factors, like poor academic performance, disabilities, age and absenteeism. Consistent poor performance traced from the previous classes in one’s school life contributes a great deal in school dropout. This is so because one values him/herself as worthless and to some extend develop other bad perspective tracing back to the family background terming it as either a curse or a generational pass down. With this in mind the students opts to leave school and find something else to do. Disabilities have over the years posed a great challenge to the educational sector of the nation. A disabled individual finds it difficult to cope up with other medically fit students especially where they share the same school. Others view them as a curse in the society for example the case of albinism and try to avoid them as much as they can. This socialization gap created leaves these disabled students to suffer from loneliness and low self-esteem. At the end, they find themselves out of school not by choice but by circumstance. Age is another crucial factor. Most students from remote areas start schooling at a latter age. This adversely affects their performance in school since age and performance go hand in hand. Younger aged students tend to grasp concepts at a higher rate as compared to older ones. Moreover, in most circumstances those students who perform well in class tend to be the younger aged. When one tends to be above his/her class in terms of age, he/she develops a negative attitude towards him/herself. In addition, this is accompanied by nicknames from other students creating inferiority. To avoid this shame most of the students that are faced with this challenge find themselves out of school. Absenteeism can be attributed to various reasons like distance between school and home for the case of day scholars, sickness, and huge school fees arrears.
