This literary artwork used styles with strong influence of Latin poetic traditions. Lucanus used punctuation in his verses with short pithy lines or slogans known as the “sententiae”. The epic poems notably used the Golden Age literary technique of discontinuity presenting narratives as a series of discrete episodes often without any transitional or scene-changing lines. Lucanus also had some influence of ideas from Virgil's epic which he usually made inversions to undermine the original and heroic purpose of the writings.
