Online learning becomes more popular due to convenient and inexpensive technology available to everyone since they were first offered in the end of twentieth century (University of Central Florida started in 1997) (Dehaas, 2012). Most college students took at least one online class. Last semester Jennifer Widom taught 90,000 students online classes at Stanford University (Lewin, 2012). E-learning trend is growing tremendously all over the world, giving amazingly flexible schedules, wide and inexpensive study options available right from your own home. Four significant causes financial, simplicity, convenience, and technology are affecting increase in number of students taking online classes.
Financial cause
One of the reasons for students to take more online classes and universities to offer them is financial. Universities take any opportunity to save money. Schools dont replace retired professors, but divide their work between those who are left. In result of it, blended courses, partly online and partly in class, are created. York University began offering 11 blended courses in 2011-2012 and is planning to add 75 (Dehaas, 2012). The University of Central Florida saved approximately 7 million dollars in constructions expenses since 1997, when they offered the first blended course (Dehaas, 2012).Popularity of e-learning is also between students trying to save money. Higher-education tuitions went up 450 percent within last 25 years, when health care went up only 250 percent (Lyons, 2012). Less expensive online classes without expenses like transportation or boarding are great alternatives for many who dont want to take the risk of paying too high school loans. Students are afraid of being unemployed after graduation. They will choose online education over residential learning experience. Free or less expensive than on campus classes are offered in more universities and colleges every year. Nonprofit institutions like Khan Academy proved that free on line instruction can be a great form of education (Trumbull, 2012). Also, very prestigious schools like Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology decided to create online courses, which they called edX, to create more options for students. Stanfords professor Sebastian Thurn came up with an online pilot program free of charge Introduction to Artificial Intelligence; 130,000 students from the whole world signed up so far. His mission gives the same quality of education for just 2 percent of the current cost. At the moment most prestigious universities like Stanford instead of credit offer each student statement of accomplishment, after passing the same quality final exams (Keller, 2011).
SIMPLICITY
Another reason students take online courses is, because is relatively simple and uncomplicated. That fact helps students to choose online class over those on campus. Todays generation begins to learn how to use a computer usually before they are potty trained. Many classes offer open book tests and quizzes, which makes them easier to pass with higher score than in class. But unfortunately, online courses are also very simple to cheat! Universities put very little efforts to online education security. Creating fake accounts, or sharing Google Doc at the same time by a few students to solve tests problems are the most popular and uncomplicated ways to do well on the online tests. For todays high-tech familiar students, this is just an invitation to get an easy A on introduction classes and getting through school without much effort (Online classes..., 2012).
CONVIENENCE
Convenience is also one of the causes for increasing in number of students taking online classes. Choosing own pace of online study straight from your own home effect in choosing them over traditional on campus courses. Raymond Vaughn, 43, lost his job as a window installer almost a year ago. After hundreds of job applications sent out, he decided to choose online study in medical billing for only 69 dollars a month. Vaughn, who still gets unemployment, cannot wait to graduate, get his first job and not be supported by his girlfriend anymore. He studies for several hours every day from home. He doesnt waste any time on transportation, getting dressed or shower before he starts his online study. Possibility to make his own schedule makes it even more convenient (Goodman, 2009).
NEW TECHNOLOGY
Whether we want or not technology is coming and will change the school system. Growing popularity of e-learning is unavoidable. Getting degree on line already becomes very common and will grow as the education technology improves every day. Although employers when looking at the applications still prefer traditional schools diploma, they start to recognize and accept online degree as common education (Lewin, 2012). Online universities started to work on better security and cheaters-proof system. This should eventually bring better reputation to online courses. The whole system of ordering online research papers and submitting as own effects traditional courses on campus as well. One of the newest and interesting anti-cheaters system widely used by teachers is software features a services checking assignments for signs of plagiarism (Online classes, 2012).
CONCLUSION
Since the first online classes that became available in the end of twentieth century, most students had an opportunity to take at least one. The main reasons driving us to choose online course over on campus is convenience. In todays busy, often complicated, and overwhelming world convenience is what appeals to many students. Students love their flexible schedule, writing assignment in their own pace. They can even take their homework with them, anyway they go. If it wasnt for the new technology, the convenience wouldnt have been that great. Education is expensive and e-learning helps to save money. Many students like to take advantage of unquestionably simple and convenient online learning. Other causes of increase are simplicity and finances. Classes are easy enough that most people are capable of finishing he if they able to finish similar class on campus. Due to high technology, popular trend of taking online courses will be only growing and prices will be going down.
