Q:
ProblemProblem #1:jbpl
Define each of the following terms:
a) Normal Distribution
b) Quartiles
c) Standard Deviation
d) Median
Problems #2, #3 & #4
Here are the systolic (upper) blood pressure readings of an individual as
measured over a 15 day period:
145 152 135 132 158 134 137 144
135 144 128 133 143 145 147
a) Find the mean, median and mode of this data
b) Blood pressure lowering medication is prescribed when a patient has
an average systolic pressure over 140. Should a doctor prescribe
medication to this person with these numbers? WHY or WHY NOT?
c) Calculate the standard deviation of this data
Problem #5:
The Occupy Movement touts that they are the other 99% of the American
population in terms of wealth. Currently at this time, the top 1% of the
population controls 42% of the wealth in America, the greatest wealth
distortion since 1928.
a) Given this distribution of wealth, would mean or median be the better
choice to describe the financial condition of the average American?
WHY?
b) If a plot were made of wealth versus % of the population, would it be
a normal distribution, or heavily skewed to the right? Explain.
Problem #6
The average height of an American woman is 64.5 inches, with a standard
deviation of 2.5 inches. I was at the pool this weekend for my kids swim
meet. One of the teams coaches is 62 inches tall, while another is a
whopping 72 inches tall.
a) What % of women are shorter than the 62 inch woman?
b) What % of women are shorter than the 72 inch woman?
Problem #7
Use the table above to answer the following:
a) List the 12 nations that are in the Upper Quartile with regard to per
person emissions of CO2
b) What is the range of the data in the Upper Quartile?
Problem #8
The average length of a human pregnancy is 266 days, with a standard
deviation of 16 days. Babies born before 218 days are considered
premature and require incubation until they reach a nominal birth weight.
a) What percentage of births occur before 218 days?
b) Since there are roughly 4.1 million births per year in America, how
many babies require this intensive level of medical care?#1:
