Klumb, Elfering, & Herre (2009) assert that sociology & industrial psychology were among the first disciplines to conduct research focused on recording events and methods. For instance, they present studies that observed the effects of unemployment on daily life (Jahoda, Lazarsfeld, and Aeisel, 1991 as cited in Klumb et al., 2009). During the 1950's and 1960's, I-O psychologists began to use self-recording methods to study communication. Other studies recorded the interactions to work, based on events that had strong roots in I-O psychology. For example, I-O is useful in research on drug use in the workplace. Sujak, Villanova, & Daly (1995) approached the issue of drug testing from the perspective of examining the relationships between the characteristics of the drug-testing program and potential applicants' attitudes and intentions to apply for employment in organization.
