Paul’s heterosexuality allows him to interact closely with the other guards and inmates and obtain their respect.
Religious Orientation
Religious orientation is yet another influence that can be controlled by an individual. Unfortunately, the viewers of The Green Mile are never made aware of Paul’s religious beliefs. One could make the assumption, by Paul’s actions, that he is a Christian man, but this cannot be determined as fact.
Gender Norms
The last of Worthington’s influences are gender norms and socialization. Paul spends a majority of the movie at work; this leads to close interactions with males. In the 1930s, it was normal to be heterosexual. Those who were homosexual during the time this movie took place (1935) were seen as deviants. A male who worked closely with other males would not have been placed in that type of position if he was a known homosexual.
