Preview: ... er example. What is the domain of

(x^2 - x - 2) / (2x^2 - 3x - 2)

(let class solve)

Factoring the denominator: 2x^2 - 3x - 2 = (2x + 1)(x - 2)

So the domain is all real numbers except x = -1/2 and x = 2

B. Simplifying

Factoring also leads to another useful tool for dealing with rational
expressions: simplifying.

We can simplify a rational expression when the numerator and
denominator have a factor in common.

Let's return to our example: (x^2 + x - 2) / (2x^2 - 3x - 2)

We've already factored the denominator, so we know this is

(x^2 - x - 2) / [(2x + 1)(x - 2)]

Now let's factor the numerator too.

(let class do this)

x^2 - x - 2 = (x + 1)(x - 2)

So our polynomial is really

[(x + 1)(x - 2)] / [(2x + 1)(x - 2)]

There's an x-2 on both the top and bottom, so we can cancel them out
and arrive at a simpler expression:

(x + 1) / (2x + 1)

This is what we mean by simplifying a rational expression: we find
common factors in the numerator and denominator, cancel them out, and
wind up with another rational expression for which the polynomials are
of lower order.

Let's try another example. Simplify:

(x^2 + 5x + 6) / (3x^2 + 7x - 2)

(let class do this)

We factor the numerator to get:

x^2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)

and the denominator to get

3x^2 + 7x - 2 = (x + 3)(3x - 2)

The x + 3's are in common, so we cancel them and get the simplified
expression

(x + 2) / (3x - 2)

C. Multiplying and Dividing

Multiplying and dividing rational expressions is also pretty
straightforward.

It just follows the same rules and multiplying fractions and
multiplying polynomials.

The rule is that when we multiply, we do top times top and bottom
times bottom.

When we divide, we flip the second rational expression first, then
multiply.

Generally, the one trick is that it is much easier to factor
everything first, before multiplying, because that you can catch when
cancellations will occur.

Let's try an example. Multiply:

(x - 2) / ( ...
