Mosques, Islamic places of worship, like most Islamic architecture focus on the interior space over the exterior design. However, external components of the mosque have religious significance; the dome atop a mosque symbolizes the divine power surrounding its followers (Everline, 2004). Internal ornamentation in a mosque is abundant but it is clearly based in the Islamic tenets which prohibit the use of figurative art (Benson & Diyanni, 2005). Intricate ornamentation decorates the interior of the mosque, dominated by a preference for balance and repetitive geometric and floral patterns (Benson & Diyanni, 2005). Calligraphic writings decorate the interior walls of a mosque; these ornate writings which depict verses from the Quran further illustrate the religious devotion of the architects (Benson & Diyanni, 2005).
Minarets or towers located in proximity to mosques are used to call devotees to worship, also demonstrate the religious tenets of the Islamic faith. A minaret, reaching toward the heavens, symbolizes the proclamation of faith demonstrated in the call to worship (Everline, 2004).
