Currently, backing up data is something the company does on a monthly basis. By today’s de facto standards, this rate is at least four times too infrequent. Ideally, backups should be performed on a daily basis. If the company does not depend so heavily on its data, the rate of backup could be decreased to weekly. The standard method of backing up data is through the use of a tape drive. Tape drive technologies have evolved to now include tapes capable of storing over one terabyte (TB) of compressed data. Seagate and Sony offer Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT), which is touted as being capable of 1.3TB of compressed data storage on a half-inch wide tape.
Data can be backed up using a rotation of backup tapes. One popular backup schedule is the grandfather, father, son (GFS) rotation. At the beginning of every month, the network administrator creates a grandfather copy of the server, which is stored off-site. The father tapes are created weekly and are also stored off-site. Incremental or differential backups are created daily, thus completing the backup rotation. For a standard five day work week, this amounts to 21 tapes required weekly to backup the server completely.
Besides the generally accepted method of a tape backup drive and cassettes, many companies offer off-site server backup. Data is transmitted over the Internet to a service provider who has generally listed their credentials and security features on their website. The service provider then stores the client’s data in case there ever becomes need for it. One such company is Carbonite.
