· Select two works of art. Chosen works must be from the field of visual art, architecture,literature, or music. One piece must be from the Islamic civilization; the second piece must be from the Early Chinese or Japanese civilizations. Use the planning guide in Appendix A to ensure that you cover each art form.

· Write a 350- to 500-word short essay for each piece. Essays require APA formatting.

Each essay should include the following points:

o What aspects of the civilization and its cultural development are represented in this piece?

o Cite the references used for visual and sound pieces. If you use anything from the Internet, include the proper URL.

Qawwali is a traditional Islamic song mostly found in India and Pakistan mostly associated to dictums of the prophets and praises of God which history is dated back on 11th century predating the birth of Prophet Muhammad. This kind of music representing Islamic music is mainly spiritually focused and is associated to the Sufi tradition which aim is to attain truth and divine love through personal experience. When referencing early Japanese pottery, Jomon refers specifically to the corded pattern created by impressing ropes or cords around the pottery to add to the vessel’s strength as well as its aesthetic value (Benson & Diyanni, 2005).
