If the roles were reversed, and a White barber charged twice as much for a Black male to get his hair cut in the U.S., he would be called raciest. Fortunately for the Marines stationed down here, they cut our hair for the same price as the locals. Even though I do not think that it is fair to exploit members of the minority group simply because they are different, this situation is far less serious than the minority groups I learned about over the past nine weeks.
The texts used for this course does not contain information about people like me. All the studies associated with this course focused on minority groups and the struggles each one dealt with a minority group member. Being a white male growing up in the United States, I am a far cry from being a minority group member. As whether or not the author of the text is a white male American, I do not have sufficient information to make that call. Being here in the Bahamas is one of the two times that I was considered a minority. Even though I did not have to deal with anything nearly as bad as minority members in the United States, this experience definitely opened my eyes to the realization that it is not easy being a minority group member.
The local media here in Nassau does not represent minority members like me. Their local media focus is on community affairs for the majority, which are the Bahamian locals. Occasionally, they will discuss what is going on in America in their local papers or broadcasting. Some topics include politics, economic issues, and travel information.

Preview: ... e. People of European decent are usually not covered in classes like this, and as I’ve already said to my teacher, I don’t think this is entirely fair. Everyone assumes that white people don’t experience racism. In fact, white people are usually the ones getting pointed at for being racists. That’s why my situation is so weird, because I’m the one who experiences all the prejudice and racism when I leave my own little community. I am always outnumbered when it comes to race here in El Paso. I’m mad that this city has to be like this. We need to all be understanding and just accept each other. Instead you have protests downtown with everyone waving huge Mexican flags on Cinco de Mayo, some people even throwing things at all the white people that drive by, at our cars. We even had a group of Mexicans protesting outside the military gates saying that people in the military are bad people because of the

war. It’s like they think we don’t have a right to live here! It’s 2007! Come on; are we not smarter then this? Obviously some people aren’t.
The local media represents people like me more than anyone. We have all the popular shows here, most of them are in English. The news channels here are in English. There are about 5 Spanish channels, which I think is weird, because such a large percentage of the population speaks Spanish. You would think that most of the local channels would be Spanish speaking channels. You have the Spanish soap opera channel, and the Spanish game show channel and then some Spanish infomercials. Even the radio stations here are, surprisingly, mostly in English, with only a few stations that broadcast in Spanish. Of ...
