Amendments XIII, XIV, XV, XVI and XVI from the Bill of Rights.

On each Amendment, what is your opinion on:

1. The impact that each amendment had on society at the
time it was implemented.

2. What impact it currently has on you as a member of
society.

3. How visible it is in society today.

Amendment XV states: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." This was one of the most monumental and historically significant amendments of all time, because it expanded the right to vote to men of all races and ethnicities. Passed just five years after the abolition of slavery, this is amazing considering the quick progress. However, it is interesting to note that women, white and black, still did not have the right to vote. Although women did not have the right to vote, this expansion of suffrage rights set a precedent which was revisited later in the history of the United States to expand the right to women as well. It has had a great impact on me because, although I would have had the right (because of my caucasian ancestry) to vote, I feel the elections are more just if a larger portion of the population is represented. Furthermore, since the amendment was passed in 1913 on the eve of the first World War, black men felt that they were included in the society of the United States and enlisted in large numbers for the first time in United States history.
