The interesting fact in learning those advance skills was that, besides consideration of which edge is using in each technique, you have to keep your mind on the basic instruction. Yes, you have to flex your knees and find your balance on lower belly. I suppose that those basics will come natural as much as you spend time practicing on the ice.

I am careful to do this because I have learned that flexibility of my knees is the key for ice skating. When I practice posing or ranging (front splitting) with skating on one leg, I use the wall as support and pose or stretch on the side of the rink. This stretching prepares my core for centralizing my weight as I skate.
