Preview: ... common with my engagement and my parents is the fact that everyone thought they were too young and few were supportive. However it came as a surprise that my mother wished I would have waited longer then I did to get engaged. I found this ironic considering my mother got engaged younger then I did. Her reasoning behind her views is she thinks a person should date quite a few people before settling down and getting married.
When it came to the concept of divorce though I was ready for everyone I interviewed to tell me that if you married young, it would end in divorce. When talking to my mother about divorce she said, âI think you have a better chance of getting divorced if you get engaged young. Your father and I were both young, and didnât date much. Half way through our marriage I could have decided I didnât want to stay home like we had planned and decided I wanted to work, which is something we had not agreed on. So I think it is possible that people who get engaged young have a higher risk of divorce, simply because people change over years and do not always grow in the same direction. You just have to make sure and hope you still want the same thing years down the line.â My father said almost the same thing in his interview, which I found to be pretty amazing, and think the reason they are still together after thirty three years has a lot to do with their own answers about divorce.
 Considering the divorce rate is now up to almost 50% I was curious what this meant for those who got engaged at a young age. According to a study I found, nearly 43% of those who get engaged and married under the age of twenty will end in divorce. So with all the divorce talk and the overwhelming statistics it is amazing to find people who have still gotten engaged at and early age. Not surprising though, those who got engaged young all had the same views about the hardships of being engaged. Everyone seemed to agree that getting engaged is hard because of others opinions and judgments.
