Marx argues that studies of deviance and social control within sociology and related disciplines often fail to give adequate attention to the immediate environment of specific acts of rule breaking and rule enforcement. Marx presents a typology of three sepearate kinds of interdependent relationships that may be found between interpretative communities and individuals who break rules, and those who enforce them. Specifically, he is interested in instances whereby authorities actually accidentally encourage the breaking of rules, doing so by the very act of their own enforcement actions; Marx refers to this variety of relationship as escalation. For instance, police officers who engage in entrapment of prostitutes and their cliens may imprison both individuals, and actually encourage and create new needs for the selling and buying of sex, as well as other social problems.
