4. CheckPoint: Researching Health and Human Services Agencies.
One of the best ways to learn about how various health and human services organizations meet human needs is to research and study agencies within your city or state, such as the United Way. For example, go to http://national.unitedway.org/myuw/index.cfm and type in
your city, state, and zip code to locate your local United Way organization. Note: The research you conduct for this CheckPoint will assist you with completing your Week Two
assignment.

Research and compile a list of the health and human services agencies in your city and/or state.
Choose two agencies from your list. Research and study each agency’s available documentation, obtained either from the agency’s Web site or other sources on the Internet. Search for information relating to how the agency determines needs and the demographic it serves. Refer to Appendix C for tips on where to find this information.
Compare and contrast the information you found for each agency, then answer the following questions in approximately 200 to 300 words:
What needs does each agency meet and what demographic does each agency serve? What or who may have influenced the agency’s decision to meet the needs of this demographic group(s)?
What differences have you observed between the ways the two agencies attempt to meet human needs?
How successful is each agency with meeting the needs of their demographic group? What challenges may be preventing them from meeting certain needs?

Follow the steps below to complete this assignment:
Review your list of local city and state agencies (or the two agencies you compared) and select a target population. Then, research a current issue or problem affecting this target population.
Identify the current and unmet needs of your chosen target population, and describe the possible obstacles that are preventing resolution of the problem(s). What current health or human services programs exist, and how are they helping or hindering the problem?
Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper, formatted according to APA style that summarizes your findings. Cite at least two references, using APA style.
