Gettys!” Kane seems to be exaggerating here, as well as in the majority of his speech.<br> Kane addresses his arguments with creative devices by utilizing his knowledge on how to conduct a presentation with plentiful rhetoric devices, some fallacies and a lot of biasness. It seems this may not be the proper way to go about conducting an argument, but it seems to have worked in his favor during this speech. Kane’s arguments were very effective because he strategically placed these creative devices throughout his speech to intrigue, entertain, and to persu ...

Preview: ... Throughout the American Rhetoric Movie Speech (via the Web site http://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/moviespeechcitizenkane2.html), several examples of bias, fallacies, and rhetorical devices were identified. The bias identified was a political bias against Boss Jim W. Getty’s political party and state leadership. There also appeared to be a bias toward the “rich” or well-to-do citizens, as the speaker alluded to the opinion that “ordinary” people and the working class are mistreated and unappreciated. Among the fallacies seen, were apple polishing, ad hominem, and scapegoating. For example, the campaigner’s statement “the fighting liberal, the friend of the working man” is considered apple polishing by attempting to appeal to Kane’s ego. Ad hominem was seen quite a few times throughout the speech, such as “the evil domination of Boss Jim Gettys” and “to point out and make public the dishonesty, the downright villainy, of Boss Jim W. Gettys' political machine”. Additionally, the statement “Boss Jim W. Getty’s political machine” and any negativity associated with the “pol ...

I found the above sentence to fall under the category of apple polishing, because the campaigner chose strong words that he knew would appeal to the crowds. The other apple polishing fallacy I found was in the words of Kane’s speech which stated “I will protect the underprivileged, the underpaid and the underfed”.
