Until recently, laws, social and religious beliefs have historically prevented homosexuals from “coming out” and announcing their sexual orientations. Religion and legality aside, exists other historical reasons gays were, and somewhat still are shunned, or unfairly treated by society.
In many cultures, men-are-men, and women-are-women, raised in the beliefs that men provide security, women provide comfort while remaining sexually submissive to the needs of the usually physically dominant male. As cited by Trujillo, (1991) “Latino and Latina American heterosexual people view Latina American lesbians as threats to the tradition of male dominance” (Rathus, 2005, p. 301). This is not to say that all cultural societies condemn homosexual behaviors, a few encourage sexual relations between men and juvenile boys.
