Q:
600–800 words
Details: Environmental Regulations and Taxes
Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:
At an alternative energy symposium in Dubai, you finish a panel presentation on the benefits of solar power. After the presentation, a fellow panel member asks about environmental protection and the growing body of laws, regulations and taxes designed to promote conservation and resource use. You agree to think about the best answer and get back in touch.
Government can effect environmental change by regulating and/or taxing things that create pollution and affect our environment. In 250 words or more you will:
•Identify a U.S. environmental regulation or an environmental tax.
•Describe its purpose.
•Discuss how effective the regulation or tax has been in reaching its purpose. If this is a proposed rule or tax, explain its expected effectiveness.
•Use scientific data as appropriate to support your argument. If this is a proposed rule or tax, explain its expected regulatory and scientific effectiveness.
Currently there are proposed carbon taxes and “cap-and-trade” regulations. They would be good to explore for this assignment. Other fine examples include the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and CERCLA (creating Superfund). You also may use another federal law or even a state law if is particularly sweeping (e.g. California motor vehicle emissions).
